Second Samuel

Chapter 1

After Saul dies, David hears about it through an Amalekite, who slain Saul. David asks about some details then has one of his men kill the guy. The chapter ends with a song of lamentation.

Chapter 2

David is made king of Judah and Ishbosheth was king over Gilead. There is a small battle between Abners men and Jaob's men in a pool and all died. There is also a chase of Abner by Asahel. Asahel kept pestering Abner until Abner killed him. Asahel's brothers, Joab and Abishai, pursued Abner until abner said, "Shall the sword devour forever?" and they decided not to fight for a while.

Chapter 3

David's house grew stronger and Saul's house grew weaker. Sons were born to David. Amnon - whose mother was Ahinoam, Chileab - whose mother was Abigail, Absalum - whose mother was Maacah, Adonijah - whose mother was Haggith, Shephatiah - whose mother was Abital, and Ithream of Eglah, Davids wife.

Abner was doing well in the house of Saul till one day he is acused by ishbosheth, Saul's son, of going into his fathers concubine. Offended by this acuisation, he decides to give all of Saul's house to David and goes to him to make a covenant. David agrees to the terms on one condition, that they bring Saul's daughter Michal. They do this and her present husband morns her leaving. Abner meets with David and has a feast. He then leaves in peace, but is hunted by Joab and slain. This bothers David and curses the house of Joab. He morns Abners death and the people admire him for this.

Chapter 4

Ishbosheth heard of the news of the slaying of Abner and his courage failed, and Israel was dismayed. Two raiding captains of Ishbosheth, Baanah and Rechab, slip into his house and kill him and take his head to David. Again David is angered by this and has them killed. He then discraces their bodies by the pool at Hebron, but burries the head of Ishbosheth in Abner's tomb.

Chapter 5

The elders of Israel accept David as their king. He was 30 when he began his reign and ruled for 40 years. He then went on to bigger things, ending up in Jerusalem, and reigned there for 33 more years. David continued to attack cities and also took on more wives and concubines. He had more sons and daughters whose names were Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet. David then went on to conquer the Philistines as well.

Chapter 6

David then went out to collect the ark of God. He brought it out of the house of Abinadab, and as he was bringing it home aman, Uzzah, reached out for the ark and was smote by God. David then feared the Lord. He had the ark placed in a neighboring village where it brought many blessings to the people there for three months. David decided then to bring it into his house. While it was being brought in, David danced about it in a just a loin cloth. This angered Michal who watching from her window. After performing sacrifices and offerings to the Lord, David went into her and she then told him of her discust. He then made shure that she would have no children to her death.

Chapter 7

Here David says that he is in a cedar house and the ark is in a tent. He asks his prophet Nathan what to do. The Lord comes to Nathan and asks him to tell David to build a house for him and in return his name shall be made great. So Nathan tells David this and he then goes to the Lord and God tells him the same thing.

Chapter 8

David does more fighting and conquering in this chapter. By the end of the chapter he has claimed all of Israel, and ruled over them fairly and justly.

Chapter 9

In this chapter Sauls crippled son, Mephibosheth, makes a return appearance. David, wanted to show kindness to the house of Saul, gives Mephibosheth all his father had and allows him to dwell with him in Jerusalem.

Chapter 10

The king of the Ammonites died and David sent some of his servants to comfort Hanun on his father's death. But his princess thaught they were there to spy out the city, so the servants were humiliated by cuting off half their beards and half their garments. (the lower half) So David made his way to them. The Ammonites, fearing Davids wrath, gathered an army of Syrians to help them fight David. In the end David won and the Syrians were under Davids rule.

Chapter 11

David, while walking on the roof of his house, saw a beautiful woman bathing. He inquired about her and had her brought to him. He layed with her and got her pregnant. He found out that she was married and her husband sent out to the front lines of battle, where he was killed. He then took Bathsheba for his wife and she bore him a son. But this displeased the Lord.

Chapter 12

The Lord sent to Nathan to David and told him of a man who was rich and of one who was poor. The rich man had several flocks of sheep, but the poor man only had one. A traveler came to town and the rich man would not give him any of his sheep, but took the poor mans only ewe and prepared it for the stranger. This story angered David and he said that this man should be killed, and restore the man his ewe four times. Nathan told David that he was the man and that the Lord was going to punish him by not allowing him to got to battle anymore and give all of his wives to his neighbors and let them have them in full sunlight as an embarisment. But instead He makes Davids newborn son sick, and he dies. David comforts Bathsheba and has another son, Solomon, who the Lord loves. David then goes on to slay the rest of the Ammonites.

Chapter 13

In this chapter Amnon, one of Davids sons, was in love with Tamar, his sister. He tricked her into comming into his house and asked her lie with him. When she wouldn't, he forced himself on her and threw her out. This angered her brother Absalom. Absalom then plotted to kill Amnon and did. The king thaught that he killed all his sons, but was relieved when he found out that they were not. He still morned for Amnon. Because of this, Absalom fled away for three years.

Chapter 14

Joab could sense that the king had a place in his heart for Absalom and devised a plan to get him to allow him to come back. Well, David saw through the lies but still allowed Joab to bring Absalom back. Absalom had three sons and one daughter, Tamar who was beautiful. Absalom then demands that the king see him, and if there is guilt, let him kill him. But instead David kissed him.

Chapter 15

Now Absalom takes on the role of judge to win the hearts of the people and eventually he has many followers. He declares himself the king of Hebron. This causes quite a stir in Davids house and everyone starts fleeing in fear of their lives. With conspirators at every turn, David flees to Mount Olive and meets Hushai who talks him into returning to the city.

Chapter 16

When David returns things are not well. He was asked to leave and put on a donkey and any town that went through he was stoned along with his people. They said that Absalom was king now and Absalom went into his fathers concubines to prove it.

Chapter 17

Thus begins the pursuit of David. Absalom wants him dead, but only him, so that the people will find favor in him. But as his plans for capture fail, we find out that there are still those who remain loyal to David.

Chapter 18

Well David had enough followers to put together an army to fight. He instructed all not to slay Absalom. The forest however did not listen. It said that the forest took more lives than the sword that day. Absalom was one of those that was caught on a thicket. He was killed while he was vulnerable. This saddened the king when he heard of it and said that he would rather of died rather than his son.

Chapter 19

King David starts making his comeback by explaining different things to the groups that questioned him. It seemed like people were ready to take him back as king.

Chapter 20

There was still a voice of opposition to David, a man named Sheba. The people of the city where Sheba stayed came out to Joab to beg for their lives. The promised Joab the head of Sheba in return for their lives. He agreed and it was made so. So David regained his place, and Joab was the commander of the army of Israel.

Chapter 21

There was famine in the days of David for three years. The Lord said that this was because of blood guilt on Saul because of what he did to the Gibeonites. So he set out to make it right. They asked for seven of his sons to be hanged, and he gave them over to the Gibeonites to do so. Then all the bones of everyone involved with Saul, including Saul, were put into a tomb and all was well. The rest of the chapter talks of more battles, four of which were with the giants of Gath. But all were slain by the servants of David.

Chapter 22

This chapter is the song of David. A basic recap of the events of the chapter, but in a broader sense (no details) It is a song of praise and thanks.

Chapter 23

A list and description of Davids mighty servants. It tells of three main people - Joshebbasshebeth, Eleazar, and Shammah. Ther were about thirty others listed as well.

Chapter 24

The anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel again, and He made David order his people to be numbered. They did this and came up with 1,300,000 people in all. The Lord said he would one of three things - 3 years of famine, flee for three months or three days of pestilence. David chose the pestilence and on the first day 70,000 people died. David asked for the Lord to spare them, and built an altar to the Lord to keep anything more from happening.
