Leviticus - The Third book of Moses

Chapter 1

Discriptions of various types of offerings. Quite gorry in detail. Items that are covered are cattle, sheep and birds.

Chapter 2

More on sacrifices. This time grain and friuts. Both are always mixed oil, and add salt to all grain offerings.

Chapter 3

More offerings. Same text as chapter one, but this time it is about peace offerings. The only difference is that goats are included this time.

Chapter 4

Guidelines for sacrifices after sinning. Gives rules for different types of people. Every sin was treated the same, it was the type of person or persons that mede the difference.

Chapter 5

More rules on payments for sins.

Chapter 6

Sin payments for robbery or oppression.

Chapter 7

The law of the burnt offering.

Chapter 8

Here Moses does all that the Lord commanded in the chapter before. Also Aaron and his sons begin their ordination, which will take seven days.

Chapter 9

The eighth day, and more ceremony and offerings, with Aaron, his sons, and the people.

Chapter 10

Nadab and Abihu, Aarons sons, gave an unholy offering to the Lord, and the fire consumed them and they died. Moses explained this to Aaron and he held his peace. The rest of the chapter is sacrifices and rules. The Lord also told Aaron not to drink wine or stong drink in the tent of meeting.

Chapter 11

Here it is! The eat/don't list:
You can eat whatever parts the hoof and is cloven footed. You cannot eat these four animals - The camel, the rock badger, the rabbit, nor the pig. You can eat those animals in the waters with fins and scales. Nothing else (what this may include I'm not shure - No more Alaskan King Crab!) As far as birds, anything goes except these - The eagle, vulture, osprey, kite, falcon, raven, ostrich, nighthawk, seagull, hawk, owl, cormorant, ibis, water hen, pelican, carrion vulture, stork, heron, hoopie, and the bat. Don't eat winged insects - except for locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers. Don't touch animals that part the hoof, but don't chew the cud, and is not cloven footed. Also all that go on thier paws or all fours. There goes the family pet! Some other animals that are unclean are the weasel, mouse, great lizard, gecko, land crockodile, the lizard, sand lizard, and chameleon. Also it is not a good Idea to eat something already dead. do or touch any of these unclean acts and you shall be unclean until the evening. Some others not to eat are those that swarm, goes the belly, or goes on all fours, or has many feet.

Chapter 12

This has to do with the purification after childbirth. For males the mother is unclean for seven days and must be purified for 35 days. Twice as long for a female child. After purification there must be a sacrifice of a lamb and a pigeon or turtle dove. If the mother cannot afford a lamb, two turtle doves will be ok.

Chapter 13

Leprosy chapter. It gets pretty detailed about the different sores you can get, and whether or not you are clean or unclean.

Chapter 14

This chapter tells you what to do if you have leprosy. It explains all of the offerings and sacrifices you should do.

Chapter 15

The discharge, semen, and period chapter. What to do and who is clean or unclean for how long and when.

Chapter 16

Aaron is given instructions on more rituals and offerings. The chapter ends talking about a day of atonement, on the tenth day of the seventh month. This day you should afflict yourself and do no work. I'm not shure what holiday this is, any clues?

Chapter 17

This chapter basically says that anyone who kills an animal not for a sacrifice to the Lord shall be cut off from his people. The same is true for those eat blood. It doesn't seem like a good idea to do either of these things.

Chapter 18

This chapter deals with seeing your relatives naked. It says not to see them, not your mother, or your father, not your sister, or your brother, not even aunts and uncles. Not even your grand children, not anyone. No inlaws either. You should not see a woman naked while she is menstruating. You should not also take woman as a rival wife to her sister, while she is alive. Also, you should not sleep with a man as you do a woman, and don't sleep with your neighbors wife. One last note, don't sleep with animals.

Chapter 19

This chapter talks about alot, so be patient. First, do not make molten gods. Also when making a peace offering it should be eaten on the same day or the following, three days go by, forget it. This is the part I like, leave part of the harvest for the poor, don't steal or lie, or swear by Gods name. Do not curse the deaf or put obstacles in front of the blind. It talks about being fair in judgement, not partial to the poor nor the wealthy. It says not to hate, and to do to your neighbor as you would yourself. Don't mix breeds of cattle or plant different crops in the same field. Don't wear two different kinds of clothing. (made of different stuff) Don't sleep with slave women. When planting many trees, wait until the fifth year year to eat any fruit. Again, don't eat blood. Don't practice augury(?) or witchcraft. Don't round off the hair of you temples or mar the edges of your beard. Don't cut your flesh or get tatoos. Don't make your daughter a harlot, don't turn to mediums or wizards. nor seek them out. Honor the face of an old man, treat strangers as your own, and finally, make shure not to give false measures.

Chapter 20

This chapter basically says that if you do any of the above you should be stoned, put to death or burned.

Chapter 21

Rules for priests. What they can't do. More of the same that was mentioned in chapter 19. It also states that the priest shall be for the most part, perfect. No flaws or deformaties.

Chapter 22

Rules for dealing with Holy sacrificial food. Also who can eat of it and who can't. The last part of the chapter talks of the purity of animals offered.

Chapter 23

The chapter of feasts. The sabbath day, the 14th of the first month.(?) The 15-22 of the same month - feast of unleavened bread, the Celebration of the first reap of the harvest. Seven full weeks after that (50 days) cereal offering, the first day of the seventh month, the tenth day of the same month is a time for atonement. The fifteenth day of the seventh month starts the feast of the booths(tabernacle) and after this on the eighth day is a day of solemn rest.

Chapter 24

First part of the chapter deals with the lamp oils. The second part deals with penalties. A member of camp blasphemed and cursed the name. The LOrd told Moses that the boy should be stoned and put to death. Here is written, an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, fracture to fracture - etc.

Chapter 25

Rules for the land. You should not reap or sow the seventh year. The sixth year will provide enough for you to get through the seventh. This is to allow the land to rest. The rest of the chapter deals with ownership of dwellings.

Chapter 26

The chapter tells what God will do if you do not walk in His way, follow his commandments or ordinances.

Chapter 27

The book of leviticus ends with valuation. It deals with the values for people and anomals and properties in the eyes of the Lord. The last verse says that "these are the commandments of the Lord". That was a lot more than ten, and a lot to do.
