Deuteronomy - The Fifth book of Moses
Chapter 1
Basically a recap of what happened in the previous chapters. Moses is
pointing out the peoples mistakes they have made by not trusting in him
and the Lord.
Chapter 2
A continuation of the summary of the Israelites travels during the previous
chapters.
Chapter 3
Finishes up the recap.
Chapter 4
Moses now speaks to the Israelites and asks them to keep the statutes,
ordinances and commandments which were given to them. He also says here,
"You shall not add to the Word which I command you, nor take from it."
This may be why some only take the first five books to be the only word of
God.
Chapter 5
A recap of the ten commandments explaining why we should keep them through
the generations and what will happen if we don't.
Chapter 6
Moses adds - We should love our Lord with all our heart, soul and might.
That we should paint those words on our doorposts and gates. He also
adds that we should fear God and serve Him, and never test Him. To all ways
do what is right.
Chapter 7
Again a reminder of what will happen if the ordinances are not followed,
and the blessings that will come if they are.
Chapter 8
Another reminder of the consequences of not obeying the commandments.
Here also is the famous quote "Man does not live ny bread alone"
Chapter 9
This chapter is a reminder of what happens when you provoke the Lord.
The chapter goes all the way back to the breaking of the stones that the
original commandments were on. Basically just do as the Lord asks to do,
and do not question it, least His anger be provoked.
Chapter 10
Again, talks about the origin of the commandments and the importance of
obeying them.
Chapter 11
Says that if the commandments are obeyed there will be great blessings.
If they are ignored, there will be a great curse upon you.
Chapter 12
A recap of sacrifices and rituals.
Chapter 13
Asks you to be aware of prophets and people who ask you to worship and
serve other gods. Do not follow any other god except the Lord and you will
not be destroyed.
Chapter 14
A recap of the clean and unclean animals and things to eat. Also recaps
tithes and some other rituals.
Chapter 15
Basically tells of a release of debts and things after seven years. (I
wonder if this is why the IRS only asks you to keep records for 7 years!)
The rest of the chapter says that the Hebrews will not be poor, and if there
is a poor man amoung you, get him his need.
Chapter 16
Reminders of rituals such as passover and the feast of booths. It also
mentions again about fairness in making judgement, and how not to make
an altar.
Chapter 17
Mainlt talks about stuff pertaining to getting rid of evil people in your
town. It tells how one is to be stoned and what it takes to do so. It
finnishes up by saying how kings will be chosen and what they should do.
Chapter 18
Talks about the rules for Levites. Also this is the first mention of Jesus.
It says "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from
among you, from your bretheren, - Him you shall heed."
Chapter 19
Talks about what do with people who kill people, either intentionally or
not. It also talks about making cities for the innocent to flee to, to
avoid persecution.
Chapter 20
Rules for war. Mainly talked about those who have not experienced things
should go back and experience them. It also talks about what to destroy
and not to destroy with different cities.
Chapter 21
Tells what to do when some one is found dead and how to claim a wife from
captive lands. What to do with two wives who are not loved equally. It
also tells of stoning stubborn sons to death, and what to do with the body
after being put to death.
Chapter 22
Tells of many different situations, mainly pertaining to sex and virginity.
Lots of crimes punishable by death. It tells who not to sleep with, and
what retributions should be made if such acts are done.
Chapter 23
Different laws pertaining to who can enter a house of worship. It tells
also things to do in battle to stay clean, as well as not to buy prostitutes
and also rules for lending money. It talks about vows and taking things
from your neighbors crops.
Chapter 24
Rules about divorce, thievery, leprosy, and loans. Also talks about
oppression, justice and slavery, as well as dealing with crops.
Chapter 25
This chapter talks about honesty and justice. Also talks of brothers that
dwell together. When one of them dies, and there is no son, the brother
who is still alive shall take his brothers wife to perpetuate his name.
Women who touch another mans privates shall have their hands cut off.
Chapter 26
Talk of tithing your bounty of fruit from the new land. Says that if you
obey the Lords' commandments, ordinances and statutes, you will be prosperous.
Chapter 27
Moses tells the people to remember the commandments in their new lands in this chapter.
Also it mentions several more things which are cursed.
Chapter 28
These are the benefits and consequences of believing or not. There are alot
more consequences.
Chapter 29
Moses reminds the people of their covenant with the Lord and examples of
bad things that could happen, and the explination being that the people
forsake the covenant.
Chapter 30
Again says that if we follow God and love Him with all our heart, God
will bless us and keep us.
Chapter 31
Moses says that Joshua will take the people into the land. The Lord also
told Moses it was time to get ready to go, so Moses prepares a song to sing
so that the people will remember the words.
Chapter 32
Moses sings his song to the Israelites and asks them to commit it to memory
and to teach it to their children. The song itself mainly speaks of
vengence and retribution. It has the same flavor of previous chapters
talking about punishments and rewards.
Chapter 33
Before his death, Moses blessed the ten remaining children of Israel. I
assume that the others were destroyed durring the trip.
Chapter 34
The death of Moses. Moses was 120 years old when he died. The people mourned
for 30 days afterward. The bible says that no-one to this day knows where
they buried Moses and also says that there has not been a prophet like
Moses who has known the Lord face to face.
